Zahara de los Atunes
Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishing village on the Costa de la Luz, 30km north of Tarifa on the Atlantic coast. Set in the middle of nothing else but a broad 12km stretch of unspoilt sandy beach, it gives off a quiet vibe that is both unsettling and stunning.
The crumbling old Almadraba built in the 15th century as a protection against pirates still sits in the village centre, and was once used as a depot and refuge for local tuna fishermen, who were known to be a notorious lot. Even Cervantes alluded to them as picaros or scoundrels in his writings.
Today, however, Zahara has transformed into an almost fashionable summer resort, offering the sun, sea, wind, and a vibrant nightlife to its visitors.
