Garrucha
Nestled between the town of Vera and the beaches of Mojacar, Garrucha has an attractive harbour and excellent beaches.
Garuccha was founded in the 16th century by a group of fishermen and where boats fished under the protection of the "Garrucha Tower" (Torre de la Garrucha). The town is in the northern part of the province of Almeria and borders the Mediterranean Sea. Tourism and fishing have become two of the main activities in Garrucha. Famous destinations to visit are the golden beaches, the Vera Aquatico park, Turre (Spanish market village), the Parish Church de San Joaquin, and the Hermitage de la Virgen del Carmen (Garrrucha’s patron saint).
The sandy beaches of Garrucha stretch for several kilometres. It has become an ideal place for watching the sunset, watersports, or sunbathing. The only blue flag town in Europe is in Garrucha making it another good reason to visit the town.
Beautiful Garrucha remains a lively fishing town. It has a long port for leisure and commercial activities. Most popular are the large red prawns from the local waters - that is why Garrucha is sometimes called ‘City of Prawns’. The town’s fishing industry is strong and has become the main source of income of the local population who generously provide for the local restaurants daily. The sea enabled Garrucha to be a focal point of the province for delectable fish cuisine.
Other activities that can be enjoyed in Garrucha include strolling along the promenade or paseo maritimo, the fishing ports and bay that are lined with palm trees, and relaxing and watching the sunset over the Mediterranean sea. Aside from these, Garrucha harbour also offers the following facilities: weather forecast, water, showers, electricity, workshops, ramp, yacht chandler, medical service, and a nautical club.
