Lanzarote
Known as the most easterly of the seven Canary Islands, Lanzarote lies in the Atlantic Ocean some 100km from the coast of Africa and 1,000km from the Iberian Peninsula. It enjoys an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius year-round.
An island of contrasts, Lanzarote is said to move back and forth in time, embracing both tradition and new ideas in one swoop: land is still tilled using the plow and fishing is done using rowing boats, and at the same time, the island plays host to modern music festivals and luxury yachts that line its harbours.
Proud of the hospitality of its people, Lanzarote has achieved remarkable success in tourism development, even gaining recognition as one of six Universal Models of Sustainable Development by the World Tourism Organization in 1987. Seven years after, in 1994, it was also declared a Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO.
