Mallorca
Majorca, also Mallorca or the "major" island, is the biggest of the Balearic Islands. Sometimes called the "Mediterranean Lady", it lies about 100 miles from the Spanish mainland, and is a blend of ancient myth, paradise, and the remarkable tourism industry, with annual visitors reaching more than nine million.
It experienced tourism development as early as the 1920s, mainly appealing to artists and intellectuals. Its people and language are most akin to Catalonia, with influences from nearby Italy and France, as well as the Greeks, Romans, Moors, and Barbary pirates. Notable attractions aside from the sun, sand, and sea are the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, and the scenic drives and small villages along the island’s northeast coast.
Palma de Majorca, or Palma, is home to more than half of the population, and is the only true city on the island. Its old quarter is a charming mix of cobbled laneways, palaces, churches, and designer bars, but is also brimming with souvenir shops for the tourists.
With its attractive climate, landscapes and cosmopolitan ambience, however, Majorca has developed into a privileged holiday resort with a cultural offer comparable to other European capitals.
